Anja McClean

Communications Manager, Marie Stopes International

Martin is an excellent producer/director who takes the time to really understand an organisation’s objectives for making a film as well as the full story and context to be covered. He filmed and produced a short film for Marie Stopes International which captured the stories of young female migrant workers in Ghana and interviews with those who work to support them. Martin understood completely, the sensitivities around filming young women talking about their experiences of gender-based violence and navigated these incredibly well. He worked hard to gather all the necessary footage in a very short period of time in the huge city markets in Accra, which presented numerous challenges. Martin was a calming presence throughout the shoot and a real pleasure to work with. He delivered a beautifully shot short film which captured the story perfectly. I would certainly work with Martin again and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend him to others too.

Martin is a very talented producer/ director with the rare ability to supervise a programme series giving it style, editorial coherency and dramatic tension.

We wanted to increase democratic engagement, demystify the issue of anti-social behaviour and raise awareness of mediation/conflict resolution. The production and direction skills of Martin Sharp resulted in six programmes successfully bringing new perspectives to resonate with young people and inform classroom practice.

Associate Dean, Arts faculty, The Open University

Martin’s attention to detail and ability to engage creatively with academic ideas was extremely valuable. We worked to a tight schedule and budget during a relatively complex shoot in the Scottish Borders. It was extremely reassuring for me to have a skilled director in place, with the experience to consider all contingencies and take care of small, but significant matters, like relaxing the contributors (including me) and dealing with staff at the various heritage sites where we filmed. I would not hesitate to work with him again or, indeed, to recommend his expertise to others.

Producer, BBC Drama

Martin Sharp is a highly visual director whose great strength lies in empowering actors to reach even difficult or emotional scenes with confidence. He is exceptionally good with new entrants to television acting, guiding them through the transition from stage to TV.

Dr Frank Monaghan

Lecturer, The Open University

I worked with Martin over a two-year period developing audio-visual resources for an OU course on language and creativity. The topic was incredibly wide-ranging covering everything from art hung in galleries to street protests in Cairo, and Martin helped us find creative ways to use sound and vision to help our students engage with often very complex ideas about how and why language is deployed in both artistic and everyday contexts. He often came up with solutions that were not only aesthetically pleasing, but also intellectually stimulating.

Martin was very easy to work with, combining professional expertise with personal warmth that helped us get through some tricky scheduling challenges and his flexibility and inventiveness made the whole production process run smoothly – no mean feat when this involved keeping teams of often very picky academics and budget-holders happy!
